Sandwiches are undeniably my favourite food. I love going to new restaurants and trying different varieties. The possibilities are endless these days with many variations of meats, cheeses, sauces, veggies and breads. So how does one choose? To make things easier I’ve created a list of my favourite sandwiches, more specifically “club” sandwiches. All of my choices are from local restaurants only found here in Winnipeg.
Nicolett Café – The Club Mansion
In my opinion this is the best club sandwich in the city. Instead of bacon they stack a layer of braised pork belly on top of a mix of white and dark turkey meat. Then they slather on a homemade cranberry Dijon mayonnaise sauce. These slight alterations to your classic club create an unforgettable savoury sandwich.
Luda’s – Ron’s Clubhouse
In the heart of the North End, Luda’s is a quaint little deli that serves up an unbelievable club. In between two-pieces of fresh bread from Gun’s Bakery, lie piles of sliced turkey and ham from local butchers. Ron’s club is served hot and wrapped in tin foil. No sides are included, but don’t worry this massive club is packed with flavour and stacked high with meat. You will be full for hours, if you can even finish it!
Stella’s – Stella’s Club
To me Stella’s is a Winnipeg trademark. There is a reason new locations keep popping up around the city; the food is so darn good! There is nothing particularly different about their clubhouse other than the fact that they bake their own breads, and have a variety of toppings you can substitute. As someone who eats there often, I recommend the multigrain toast, substitute the cheddar cheese for Havarti, and instead of regular mayo give the pesto mayo a try.
Prairie Ink – Slow-Roasted Selkirk Club
Located inside McNally Robinson, Prairie Ink is a delightful restaurant that serves up a club dedicated to using the most Canadian ingredients. Granny’s pulled turkey, Bothwell cheddar cheese, and bread baked fresh daily in store makes up this tasty sandwich.
